Open source

A professional website should not become unusable simply because you decide to change who looks after it. Every Provelopment website is built on Provelopment Foundation, a free and open-source platform published under the Apache-2.0 licence. That means the foundation underneath your website is available independently of Provelopment. You can use it yourself, work with your own developer, move to another provider, or ask us to build and manage the website for you. The service is optional. The platform is not.

What open source means for you

You do not need to understand software licensing in detail to benefit from it. The practical point is simple: Foundation gives you a professional platform to build on without requiring an ongoing relationship with Provelopment.

Is Foundation really free and open source?

Yes. Provelopment Foundation is published under the Apache-2.0 licence, and its source code and documentation are publicly available. It is the actual platform Provelopment builds on — not a reduced demonstration version, temporary trial or product that only becomes useful after you buy a service from us.

Can I use it without Provelopment?

Yes. Using Foundation does not require a Provelopment account, subscription, licence key or commercial agreement. You can adopt it independently and run your website without involving us. And choosing independence now does not prevent you from asking Provelopment for paid help later if you want or need it.

Can my own developer or agency use it?

Yes. Foundation is not reserved for Provelopment. A developer or agency you already trust can obtain the project, work with it and host the resulting website. That gives you the freedom to choose the people you want around your website rather than choosing a platform that also dictates who must service it.

What does Apache-2.0 let me do?

At a high level, it allows Foundation to be used for private and commercial purposes, modified and redistributed under the terms of the licence. Using Foundation for your business or organisation does not mean your own business content, branding or private work automatically becomes open source. The licence itself remains the authority on exactly what it permits.

Where do I get Foundation?

Foundation is available through its public project website and source-code repository. The project includes the documentation needed to obtain it, configure a website, validate the result, deploy it and keep it up to date. If you have the technical capability yourself — or work with somebody who does — you can start there.

Where does Provelopment fit?

Provelopment is the service layer around the open-source platform. If you would rather not plan, build, host and maintain the website yourself, we can do that work for you. You get the convenience of a managed professional website without giving up the freedom created by the open-source foundation underneath it.

Explore Foundation for yourself

One of the advantages of an open-source platform is that you do not have to take our word for what it is. You can inspect the project, read the documentation, review the licence and see how it is intended to be used.

The licence is the authority

This page explains the practical relationship between Foundation and Provelopment; it is not legal advice. The Apache-2.0 licence is the authority on the rights it grants and the conditions that apply. Provelopment does not claim that using Foundation transfers exclusive ownership of the upstream open-source project to you. What you gain is the right to use the platform under its licence, together with control of your own site-specific content, branding and work.

Use the platform your way

If you have the technical capability, Foundation is there for you to adopt and use independently. If you would rather have somebody else take care of the website, Provelopment can design it, build it, host it and keep looking after it for you. Either way, you are building on the same open foundation.
